A Swan Song Can Be Heard Sounding Over Lake ElfBB

The fat lady has begun performing.

I opened up this can of worms yet again, only to be repulsed by it. But that's only logical -and in a way a good thing, it's a sign of stagnant personal improvement when old projects don't look bad- since this project is years and years old by now.

I started in 2004 (that's nearly 8 years ago!), and although the whole app has since been largely rewritten more than once, it has by now become very dated. A complete rewrite would be the only correct way to continue this project, and I have neither the time nor the interest to do that.

As a consequence, I've trimmed down the roadmap quite a bit. Which means I do mean to finish this project, but I moved the goal quite a bit closer than it was.

To sum it up: ElfBB will soon receive it's final ever update (from me).

Thank you for a really useful package! I have used it for several projects and really liked it for its ease of installation and use. If you stop development, it is certainly very useful as it is.

Thanks, I'm glad to hear you have found ElfBB useful. Yes, the end of development on ElfBB has been a stated fact for a long time. The reason it hasn't stopped yet, is I have a habit of not finishing projects and didn't want ElfBB to join the ranks.

But fear not. The license allows anyone to grab the code and keep going, albeit I cannot fathom why anyone would.

All in all, I do still like the product and the idea that was the driving force that made me create it, but time has gone by and the codebase really isn't up to todays standards and certainly not my standards.

Did you ever get to giving it that last update? ;)

Well, you've probably by now figured out, I haven't. But just in case you'll revisit some day: no, I didn't. Honestly, at this point I can't realistically really see that ever happening. I thought I would definitely see this one through, but by now the codebase is already so utterly dated it wouldn't make sense for any other reason than peace of mind, and that's not really good enough.
